Punk and Westwood headline as V&A announces 2027 exhibition programme

V&A has just announced first details of exhibitions opening next year across V&A South Kensington and V&A Dundee, kicking off with ‘Punk to Pop’ in London.

Opening next March until January 2028, Punk to Pop will be an “immersive celebration of music, art and fashion, tracing how the underground scenes of 1972-1985 and a generation of radical artists “shaped the future of popular culture.”

Through a series of multi-sensory worlds where visitors encounter around 300 objects — from stage costumes to photography, music videos and designs — the major exhibition will explore how the 70s fueled the 80s and how underground scenes and movements united by a “punk DIY attitude created enduring musical genres and inspire the future of popular culture.”

It will show how a “generation of self-determined artists” – from the Sex Pistols to The Slits, The Specials to Joy Division, Wham! to Eurythmics – “responded to austerity, boredom and political turbulence, sparking a seismic cultural change that dovetailed with rapid technological advances and the richness of a multicultural society.”

Then in the same month, V&A Dundee opens with Vivienne Westwood & Jewelery (27 March 2027-1 January 2028), exploring the role of jewelery in the “aesthetic of one of the UK’s most famous fashion houses.”

The V&A added: “From the beginning of her career, Vivienne incorporated jewelery as a powerful and integral part of her designs – to add meaning and give expression to the body.”

And linking the designer to north of the border, it also said the exhibition “celebrates the house’s symbiotic relationship with Scotland,” highlighting “Vivienne’s love of Scottish textiles and culture through a selection of archive looks.”
