2026 is shaping up to be Anil Padia’s year. The Indo-Kenyan designer, founder of the women’s fashion label Yoshita 1967, won the European final of the R|Elan Circular Design Challenge on July 5, earning a place in the global final of this competition, co-organized by technical textiles business R|Elan, the United Nations’ India office, and Lakmé Fashion Week. Already a finalist for the 2026 LVMH Prizethe designer will compete against several other finalists in Delhi this October.

The designer was selected from a group of five other finalists by a European jury comprising Pascale Mussard, vice-president of the Hermès Foundation and president of Villa Noailles; Sara Sozzani Maino, creative director of the Fondazione Sozzani; Serge Carreradirector of the Emerging Brands Initiative, Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Fashion; Diane Pernetfounder and director, ASVOF; Anne-Gaëlle Lamort, head of sustainable innovation, Kering; and Katell Pouliquen, columnist and editor-in-chief of Marie Claire France.
A cultural and economic partnership between India and France
Yoshita 1967 and Anil Padia were up against France’s Coccellato, founded by Iman Coccellato and known for contemporary eveningwear; PLNGNS, founded by Dmytro Hontarenko, which transforms worn-out trainers and textile-industry waste into streetwear; and dyer-designer Matthieu Ruiz and his eponymous label. Padia also distinguished itself against the brand Béhen, founded by Joana Duarte and renowned for its traditional Portuguese embroidery, and the Italian label Florania, founded by Flora Rabitti, which seeks to redefine manufacturing in Italy.

“France has played a decisive role in my creative journey since I arrived in Paris in 2013 to study at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne (now the French Institute of Fashion),” the designer said in a statement. “Over the past five years, I have developed my business between France and Nairobi, inspired by cultural diversity and a shared commitment to responsible craftsmanship. This recognition reinforces our belief that the circular economy has the power to shape the future of fashion. I would like to thank the prestigious jury and am delighted to represent Europe at the final, which will take place in India later this year,” he continued.
This recognition further strengthens the cultural and economic ties between France and India, recently exemplified by an agreement in principle signed by the Committee Colbert and the Indo-French Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IFCCI), in the presence of the Indian Ambassador to France and leading figures from the French and Indian luxury sectors, following a free-trade agreement between India and the European Union.
